I Spy…New Subway Eat Fresh in Donegal Town

subway in donegal town

I know for many Americans out there this post seems trivial but here in Donegal a Subway opening up is huge. Well, for me at least it’s huge.

A new Subway sandwich shop just opened across the street from me yesterday and I am really happy it did. As you can probably tell from my daily lunch special post for the Blueberry Cafe, lunch in Donegal town is expensive. I have been paying up to €10 ($14) for a sandwich, some crappy salad and some crisps (potato chips). Now I can get a great tasting sandwich for half that price thanks to corporate America and globalism.

We have a Subway in Letterkenny where I live but that over 35 miles away and they don’t open before I leave for work each day our I would stop and get a sandwich. I used to work in Omagh, Co. Tyrone which was 45 miles away and they had the best Subway in the world. The staff was just amazing and they added 2 ingredients to the list, sweet corn and coleslaw. You’d be amazed what a little coleslaw can do for a sandwich. Now I just need a Starbucks to open up and I will be sorted.

Here is a photo of the new Subway from where I sit here at work:

I hear the subway closed at the end of 2009. I know a lot of people were excited about the subway, huge sandwiches, huge choice of breads, lots of toppings, cheap prices. But, they just seem like a mediocre bland place to get food (or at least the one in the US are I’ve never the one’s in Eire).

I’m actually surprised that it closed, I would have thought that during a recession that would have cleaned up and driven the locals out of business.

Why don’t you just do the 1/2 sandwich and soup at the Blueberry instead? It’s a decent price and the soup is made fresh (not from a packet) and at least what you pay is supporting a local business instead of some international corporation who just takes the profits home.

Actually, I can’t wait till I get home again to eat at the Blueberry! :)
